THEY SAY
a Trinidadian can be found anywhere that you can go, and that
they can be found doing every imaginable thing, This certainly
seems to be true in David Stevenson's case.
Born in Trinidad, in 1958, the son of Dennis
Stevenson, a celebrated Trinidadian songwriter and playwright,
who has done work for the likes of Sparrow, Kitchener and
Calypso Rose, David emigrated to Canada with the rest of his
family some 25 years ago.
The move during the early part of David's
life seemingly opened a world of opportunity for him. At age
15 David as a dancer on a Canadian television studio's dance
floor, doing what teenagers did back then, dance.
During his stint as a guitar player with
different bands the likes of Soul Express, Crack '0 Dawn.
Mark Of The Sun and Kharece, bands that have opened for such
greats as Lionel Hampton. Patti La Belle and Sammy Davis Jr,
he travelled throughout the world.
Later he found himself in New York studying
dance with The Alvin Ailey Dance Company. He has taught aeorbics
and physical fitness, which stems from an almost life long
interest in martial arts. He has acted in several television
shows, including Night Heat, and Forever Knight, and Class
Of 96.
He has also done stunt work and choreography
for the current syndicated sci-fi show TekWars. His movie
credits |
include being the stunt double for Leon in "Cool Running,". and several action adventure movies.
David also made history last year as the first man to combine the martial art of kung-fu with iceskating for the long programme of Elvis Stjoko's 1994 Winter Olympics performance.
When asked what he wants to do in the future. David replies with confidence, "I'm getting ready to direct television and movies." David's confidence, his self-assuredness, is sure to carry him to the pinnacle of success.
He has never forgotten where he comes from crediting being from a strong Trinidadian family as being the basis is for his strength. "They encouraged me to do what I dreamed... and they gave me the right values and directed me in the right way."
He does not hesitate to add, "Being Trinidadian has enriched my life, and my discipline. If I wasn't from a Trinidadian household and family. I would not be who I am today."
David Stevenson is a man who's success was a long road travelled and hard won, his further success may not be easy but he has the determination to become the most famous Trinidadian star ever, and we'll be watching the skies.
