David
Stevenson is kicking off new career: Putting martial
arts on ice. Actor/stuntman/Kung-fu expert choreographed the
riveting routine that clinched the top spot for Richmond Hill's
Elvis Stojko at the recent Canadian Figure Skating Championships
in Edmonton.
"It's
the highlight of my career putting skating and martial
arts together has never been done before. It blew everyone
away," says Stevenson, a Torontonian who also writes
and produces music and movies. Stevenson explains he was originally
contracted to train Stojko for biking and martial arts segments
in the upcoming TV special, Elvis Airborne; he was then asked
to stay on and add some punch to the skater's competitive
routine. Stevenson has appeared in numerous films, including
Cool Runnings and Talon Of The Eagle and is currently working
on the TV series TekWar with William Shatner here in town.
WORKOUT
ROUTINE; "I love kung fu. It relaxes me and helps
me in everything I do I'd be a nothing without it,"
says the third-degree martial artist, who instructs at T.O.'s
Future Dragon. Stevenson got into the martial arts 27
years ago and travels to China and Los Angeles to further
his kung fu skills by working out with the sport's masters.
Stevenson works out every day with a two-mile run first thing
in the morning, followed by stretches, Tai Chi and practicing
with martial arts weapons- swords, whip chains and pears.
In the afternoon he pumps weights and does more stretching.
"I'm big on flexibility and strength they're important
in everyday life," says Stevenson, who also relaxes
by playing music, including the piano, bass guitar, congas
and bongos.
DIET:
"I try to feed my body well no red meats, but some
chicken and seafood, and loads of vegetables and fruits.
I need food that gives me vitamins and energy."
